Spartan Stores is a leading regional grocery distributor and grocery  retailer, operating principally in Michigan and Indiana. We operate two business  segments: Distribution and Retail. We estimate that we are the tenth largest  wholesale distributor to supermarkets in the United States and the largest  wholesale distributor to supermarkets in Michigan. According to Trade Dimensions  Market Scope, our distribution and retail operations hold a combined #1 or #2  market share in many of the key Michigan markets we serve. For the fiscal year  ended March 29, 2008 ("fiscal 2008"), we generated net sales of $2.5 billion.  Established in 1917 as a cooperative grocery distributor, Spartan  Stores converted to a for-profit business corporation in 1973.
